The 'Mug & Anchor Pub' was an innovation for the town of Mahone Bay when it opened March 16, 1989. The decor and atmosphere - including the startingly real-looking 'Rhinoceros Head' mounted in the corner, brings to life 19th century English pubbery, where people drop down as part of a daily or weekly routine for lunch or an ale from one of thirteen beers on tap.

'We wanted this to be a fun place to be', says John Letson, half partner and owner along with Francine O'Hagan...'this is where you meet friends, or play Trivia, or celebrate an office event, or hang out after a day of sailing'.

To help promote the saltiness and sea of the town, the Mug helped form the first steering committee which organized the very first Annual Mahone Bay Wooden Boat Festival, now called the 'Annual Mahone Bay Classic Boat Festival' and coming up to its nineteenth year.

Old Mader's Wharf was originally built and run like a large general store/warehouse supplying the tall ships coming in to moor in Mahone Bay. Built by shipwrights, its hemlock knees, post and beams are still standing, perched on granite and high enough to weather an annual tide surge level to the back deck overlooking the parking lot.

Today the wharf houses The Mug & Anchor Pub, A.P. Reid Insurance and the funky new 'Old Mader's Wharf Emporium' run by John Letson and his wife Liesha. It's a fun place full of one-of-a-kind treasures and just as salty as it is cozy, a riot to browse through!
