*****Book Launch - Mahone Bay Old School*****
A Life and Times

Mahone Bay history will come alive on Saturday April 19, at the Mahone Bay Centre, with the publication and launch of a history of the old school entitled Mahone Bay Old School: A Life and Times.

Researched and written by Bob Sayer, the book is over 260 pages, in a coffee table format (10" X 13") with spiral binding. It contains first person accounts of school and town life, school board records, newspaper clippings, photographs, and memories of principals, teachers, and students. There are pictures on every page. More than 1400 names are listed in the index, to help find references to more than three generations of Mahone Bay area families, as well as former teachers and schoolmates.

On Saturday, April 19 at 2:00 p.m., there will be an open house so that former students and teachers will have a chance to roam through the "hallowed halls" and classrooms. The choir and band from Bayview Community School will entertain. At 2:30, Bob Sayer will present the book and a slide show of old photographs, share his experience of interviewing many former students and teachers, and introduce some of them to tell their stories "live". Coffee, tea and sweets will be served.

Publication of the book brings to fruition an oral history project initiated by the Mahone Bay Centre in 2005, with the help of a grant from the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism, Culture, and Heritage. Generous financial support from the Town of Mahone Bay and individual donors, as well as the purchase of advertising in the book by many in the local business community, has helped defray the costs of publication.

Volunteers from the Centre membership are needed to help set up (tables, chairs, memorabilia, refreshments, etc) on the morning of Saturday, April 19, from 9:00 to noon, and for about an hour at the end of the afternoon. If you can help out, even for an hour or so, please be in touch with Carol in the Centre office (624-0890) or with Ted Hobson (624-0914 or tedhobson@yahoo.com).
